Ganó el mejor boxeador del boxeo de nuestro tiempo y uno de los mejores de todos los tiempos.

Suponiendo que  las imágenes públicas de ambos boxeadores corresponden realmente a las personalidades de ambos boxeadores y no   producto de estrategias de marketting, simpatizo más  con  ¨El Canelo Álvarez¨ . No me gusta el alarde que Mayweather hace de la riqueza que posee, el poner al ídolo del dinero como centro de su vida no es nada que me agrade, pero nadie sabe las necesidades, desde diferentes puntos de vista,  que quizás Floyd ¨Money¨Mayweather Jr.  tuvo en algunos períodos de su vida.

Corrían los minutos finales del 11er asalto y un frustrado Saúl Álvarez intentaba desesperado atinar al menos un puño a Floyd Mayweatrher Jr. El mexicano lanzó un gancho desordenado, Mayweather lo evadió con elegancia, y el golpe aterrizó en una soga.

Quizás aburrido de juguetear con su oponente, Mayweather se agachó, hizo una mueca y miró preocupado al ensogado. Después de todo, fue lo mejor que conectó el "Canelo" en toda la pelea, señaló la agencia Prensa Asociada (AP).

Exhibiendo reflejos sobrenaturales y un arsenal incomparable, Mayweather le dio una paliza el sábado a Álvarez para imponerse por decisión dividida en su combate por las coronas súper welter del Consejo y la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo.

Olvide la puntuación de los jueces, 116-112, 117-111 y 114-114. Esos números no reflejan el dominio absoluto de Mayweather, que mantuvo su récord perfecto en 45 combates. Prensa Asociada vio la pelea 120-108.

Las cifras de CompuBox señalan que Mayweather conectó 232 de 505 golpes (46, incluyendo el 53% de sus golpes de poder y 42% de sus jabs. Álvarez apenas atinó 117 de 526 (22%). Y eso que, según el propio estadounidense, a mediados de la pelea se lastimó el codo izquierdo y aguantó un poco el jab.

Mayweather le dio una lección a un oponente 13 años menor y que lo superaba por 15 libras (165-150) al subir al ring, y  que contó con el respaldo masivo de las más de 16.000 personas que llenaron la Arena del MGM Grand en la víspera del día de la independencia de México.

Mayweather silenció los gritos de "¡Canelo, Canelo!" y "¡sí se puede!" con un repertorio de jabs, rectos, ganchos, ópers, y combinaciones al cuerpo y el rostro para los que el oriundo de Jalisco no tuvo respuesta.

"Canelo hace todo bien, va bien al cuerpo, pega  buenas combinaciones, contragolpea bien", elogió Mayweather, quizás demasiado generoso con sus palabras. "Canelo es un pensador, yo soy un pensador. Esto fue un tablero de ajedrez".

De ser así, lo de Mayweather fue un jaque y mate.

Mayweather embolsó unos 41,5 millones de dólares por la pelea, la segunda de un contrato con Showtime y CBS por seis combates y más de 200 millones.

El problema para Mayweather es que es demasiado bueno para su propio bien, y después de aplastar a Robert Guerrero y Álvarez,  parece que empieza a quedarse sin rivales serios. El invicto Danny García, que derrotó al argentino Luchas Matthysse en la división junior welter en la pelea semiestelar, podría ser un oponente, y también está latente la posibilidad del esperado enfrentamiento con Manny Pacquiao, quien primero debe superar su compromiso con Brandon Ríos.

"Sólo me quedan 24 meses (en el boxeo)", señaló Mayweather. "No sé lo que me depara el futuro".

Algunos se preguntaban si la potencia y juventud del mexicano, de 23 años, serían una amenaza para el estadounidense. La respuesta fue evidente desde los primeros asaltos: ni de chiste.

Álvarez (42-1-1) subió al cuadrilátero con 13 libras más que en el pesaje del viernes, pero la superioridad en tonelaje le sirvió de poco y, quizás, hasta le afectó. "Canelo" lució lento, y al no poder cazar a la gacela, dio señales de frustración.

"Obviamente no quería salir de aquí con una derrota, y me pega en el orgullo, muy fuerte. Pero así es esto, y hoy me tocó perder", expresó un cabizbajo Álvarez, quien después de la batalla tenía un moretón debajo del ojo izquierdo. "Es un peleador rápido, y lo hace más rápido todavía cuando un peleador te está punteando. Sus golpes no son de poder, sólo para ganar la pelea, para hacer puntos".

En el cuarto asalto, cuando Mayweather ya hacía de las suyas con el jab y rectos de derecha, el "Canelo" le pegó un golpe bajo en medio de un agarre. Para colmo de males, el mexicano rehusó tocar los guantes al reanudar la acción, lo que provocó un gesto de disgusto de Mayweather.

Grave error.

Mayweather cerró el round con ráfagas de combinaciones al cuerpo y la cabeza. Izquierda, derecha, jab y recto. Y cuando Canelo intentaba responder, Mayweather ya estaba en otro lugar, pegándole desde un ángulo distinto.
