WASHINGTON

Cuban dissident group begins street protest to mark government crackdown

Wed, 18 Mar 2009 2:02p.m.

Cuban dissidents and their supporters marked the anniversary on Tuesday of a crackdown six years ago which landed 75 political opponents of Fidel Castro's government in prison with lengthy sentences.

The 75 were accused of working with the United States to undermine Castro's regime, charges the activists and Washington denied.

The pressure group "Ladies in White", lead by Laura Pollan, held a prayer service on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the crackdown.

The ladies chanted "freedom" and displayed a poster with pictures of the imprisoned dissidents. Laura Pollan's husband is one of the men still in prison.
The crackdown against Cuban political activists on March 18, 2003 prompted protests from human rights groups and governments alike. Cuban officials defended the roundup, saying they needed to protect the nation from "mercenaries."

Cuba later tried and sentenced the 75 to long prison terms.

The anniversary of the crackdown comes the same day as European Commissioner Louis Michel is set to arrive in Cuba. Michel will hold talks with Cuban officials, after Europe lifted its last remaining sanctions on the island nation last October.

Cuba and the European Union ended a five-year standoff last year by signing an agreement that restarted dialogue and cooperation that stalled in 2003 after the dissidents were imprisoned.

Cuba officials welcomed the agreement with the EU because it imposed no conditions on the communist-run country, while still opening a path for dialogue.

"Ladies in White" organiser, Laura Pollan expressed concern that Michel has visited the country several times and has not met the families of the imprisoned men.

Pollan said her organisation has written a letter for the EU commissioner and expects him to receive it by hand on Tuesday evening.Since 2003, 20 of the original 75 dissidents have been released on medical parole from prison. Of those, three have left Cuba. One other dissident was released after completing his sentence.
