Lo contado en esta historia no se ajusta estrictamente en algunos detalles  a lo ocurrido  pero eso no altera significativamente la idea central de la historia. Lo anterior lo podemos confirmar cuando leemos:

NUNCA SUBESTIMES A NADIE!!

Una mujer con un vestido de algodón barato y su esposo vestido con un humilde traje, se bajaron del tren en Boston y caminaron tímidamente (sin tener una cita), a la oficina de la secretaria del Presidente de la Universidad de Harvard. La secretaria adivinó en un momento que esos campesinos venidos de los bosques, no tenían nada que hacer en Harvard.

- Desearíamos ver al presidente, dijo suavemente el hombre.

- El está ocupado, contestó la secretaria.

- Esperaremos, replicó la mujer. Por horas la secretaria los ignoró esperando que la pareja finalmente se desanimara y se fuera, pero ellos no lo hicieron y la secretaria vio aumentar su frustración y finalmente decidió interrumpir al presidente, aunque era una tarea que ella siempre esquivaba.

- Tal vez si usted conversa con ellos por unos minutos se irán, dijo la secretaria al Presidente de la Universidad. El hizo una mueca de desagrado pero aceptó, alguien de su importancia obviamente no tenía el tiempo para ocuparse de gente con vestidos y trajes baratos. Sin embargo el presidente con el ceño áspero, pero con dignidad, se dirigió con paso arrogante hacia la pareja.

La mujer le dijo:
- Tuvimos un hijo que asistió a Harvard por sólo un año, el amaba a Harvard y era feliz aquí, pero hace un año murió en un accidente. Mi esposo y yo deseamos levantar algo en alguna parte del campus que sea en memoria de nuestro hijo.

El presidente no se interesó y dijo:
- Señora, no podemos poner una estatua para cada persona que asista a Harvard y fallezca, si lo hiciéramos, este lugar parecería un cementerio.

- Oh no, explicó la mujer rápidamente:
No deseamos erigir una estatua, pensamos que nos gustaría donar un edificio a Harvard.

El presidente entornó sus ojos, echó una mirada al vestido y al traje barato de la pareja y entonces exclamó:
- ¡Un edificio!, ¿tienen alguna remota idea de cuánto cuesta un edificio?, hemos gastado más de 7.5 millones de dólares en los edificios aquí en Harvard!. Por un momento la mujer quedó en silencio y el presidente estaba feliz porque tal vez se podría deshacer de ellos ahora.

La mujer se volvió a su esposo y dijo suavemente:
- ¿Tan poco cuesta iniciar una Universidad?, ¿por qué no iniciamos la nuestra?. Entonces su esposo aceptó y el rostro del presidente se oscureció en confusión y desconcierto. El sr. Leland Stanford y su esposa se pararon y se fueron, viajando a Palo Alto California, donde establecieron la Universidad que lleva su nombre, la Universidad Stanford, en memoria de un hijo del que Harvard no se interesó.

La Universidad "Leland Stanford Junior" fue inaugurada en 1891, en Palo Alto. "Junior" porque era en honor al fallecido hijo del rico terrateniente. Ése fue su "memorial" y hoy en día la Universidad de Stanford es la número uno del mundo, por arriba de Harvard.

The university was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at age 15 the previous year. Stanford was a former Governor of California and U.S. Senator; he made his fortune as a railroad tycoon. The school admitted its first students on October 1, 1891,[2][3] as a coeducational and non-denominational institution.

Stanford University struggled financially after Leland Stanford's death in 1893 and again after much of the campus was damaged by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.[20] Following World War II, Provost Frederick Terman supported faculty and graduates' entrepreneurialism to build self-sufficient local industry in what would later be known as Silicon Valley.[21] The university is also one of the top fundraising institutions in the country, becoming the first school to raise more than a billion dollars in a year.[22]

The university is organized around three traditional schools consisting of 40 academic departments at the undergraduate and graduate level and four professional schools that focus on graduate programs in Law, Medicine, Education and Business. Stanford's undergraduate program is one of the top three most selective in the United States.[23][24][25][26][27] Students compete in 36 varsity sports, and the university is one of two private institutions in the Division I FBS Pac-12 Conference. It has gained 115 NCAA team championships,[28] the most for a university (one more than UCLA), 483 individual championships,[29] and has won the NACDA Directors' Cup for 23 consecutive years, beginning in 1994–1995.[30] In addition, Stanford students and alumni have won 270 Olympic medals including 139 gold medals.[31]

Stanford faculty and alumni have founded a large number of companies, these companies produce more than $2.7 trillion in annual revenue.[32] It is the alma mater of 30 living billionaires, 17 astronauts, and 20 Turing Award laureates.[note 1] It is also one of the leading producers of members of the United States Congress.[53][54] 67 Nobel laureates and 7 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with Stanford as students, alumni, faculty or staff.[55]

Jane and Leland Stanford modeled their university after the great eastern universities and most specifically Cornell University and Harvard University. Stanford opened being called the "Cornell of the West" in 1891 due to faculty being former Cornell professors and alumni including its first president, David Starr Jordan. Both Cornell and Stanford were among the first to have higher education be accessible, nonsectarian, and open to women as well as to men. Cornell is credited as one of the first American universities to adopt this radical departure from traditional education, and Stanford became an early adopter as well.[58]
