El gran ingeniero cubano-israelí Ysrael Seinuk ha fallecido tras una fructífera vida profesional y social

Conocí de la obra de Ysrael Seinuk por unos programas de TV Martí.
Ysrael Seinuk y su obra son ejemplos de lo avanzada que estaba Cuba en ingeniería y arquitectura en los años 50s. (la época de oro de la arquitectura y de la ingeniería civil en Cuba) y lo que hubiera sido Cuba de no haberse interpuesto en su desarrollo la debacle Castro-comunista.
Recuerdo anécdotas de Ysrael Seinuk como aquella que le pasó cuando ya en los EE.UU. y estar en un seminario sobre la entonces novedosa técnica del hormigón postensado y ver la foto que mostraba el conferencista relativa a un extraordinario puente sobre un río de EE.UU., construido con esa técnica, Seinuk, con el interés de remarcar aún más lo extraordinario de esa técnica, señaló que en Cuba se había construido un puente mucho mayor. El auditorio tomó sus palabras con cierta sorna y burla hasta que Seinuk mostró la fotografía del puente sobre el rio Cuyaguateje en Pinar del Río y vieron que efectivamente la ¨luz¨ de las vigas era mucho mayor que la del puente de la foto.
Otra anécdota que recuerdo es cuando en otra ocasión Ysrael Seinuk habló de las potencialidades de un nuevo tipo de hormigón, sus cualidades y las posibilidades de construir con él ¨agujas¨ y en general, edificios altos. Seinuk al hablar de la altura que podían alcanzar edificios construidos solamente con ese tipo de hormigón armado, tampoco lo creyeron hasta que mostró las fotos del Edificio Focsa, en su época el edificio más alto en el mundo construido sólo con hormigón armado.
Me llamó la secretaria de Ysrael Seinuk esta manana para informarme que Ysrael fallecio ayer.
Mañana sus restos serán llevados a Israel.

Professor Ysrael A. Seinuk, P.E. graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1954 from the University of Havana. In 1969, he began teaching structural courses at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture where he presently heads the Structural Department, serves as the Chairman of the Academic Standards Committee, and was past Acting Dean of the School of Architecture. Professor Seinuk teaches ARCH 122, Structures II; ARCH 142, Structures III; and ARCH 152, Structures IV.
Prof. Seinuk is internationally recognized as one of the foremost structural engineers and pioneers in the field of tall buildings and special structures. He serves as the CEO of his firm Ysrael A. Seinuk, P.C. which he established in 1976. He is a registered engineer in 19 states, and a licensed Civil Engineer in the United Kingdom, Israel and Cuba. His activities have gained him the degree of Fellow of the American Concrete Institute, The Institution of Civil Engineers in the UK, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Following 9/11, Prof. Seinuk was the only American Designer invited by the Institution of Structural Engineers of Great Britain to participate in the publication of “Safety in Tall Buildings”: standards for tall building design for the European Union.
Prof. Seinuk was named by Time Magazine as one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in America in their August 22, 2005 issue.
Prof. Seinuk has received numerous awards for his individual achievements. He is the recipient of the Society of American Registered Architects 2008 Synergy Award, in recognition of outstanding contributions relating to the advancement of architecture and the fine arts; the New York Society of Architects 2007 Distinguished Service Award; he was recently inducted into the HENAAC Hall of Fame whose members have achieved the highest honors as Hispanic Engineers, Scientists and Mathematicians; he received the 2006 Homer Gage Balcom Award for a Lifetime of Achievements and excellence in Structural Engineering from the ASCE; the 2005 Urban Visionaries Award for engineering from The Cooper Union School of Architecture; the 2005 Engineer of the Year from the Association of Cuban Engineers, and the Leader of Industry Award from The Concrete Industry Board in 1999. His firm, Ysrael A. Seinuk, P.C., has an extensive portfolio of project awards, some of which include such iconic structures as the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami; the Bronx Criminal Court Complex; The Loft 2 in Miami which received the ACEC NY Silver Award; the Trump World Tower, which received multiple awards including the highest award from the Concrete Industry Board for the year 2000; the revitalization of Grand Central Terminal; 42nd Street Redevelopment; and the Gatehouse for Philip Johnson Estate.
Prof. Seinuk is a well-known author and lecturer on engineering, environmental and educational topics. He has been featured in several educational Documentary TV Series for PBS, and has made numerous appearances on National Television. Following 9/11, he was interviewed for articles on anti-terrorism construction by the New York Times, Newsday, New Civil Engineer Magazine-UK, Constructech, Concretus and Construction Industry Times International Magazine. He was also requested to speak on the topic by WSLRN Broadcast TV, the Cement League, the Department of Environmental Protection and The Construction Users Roundtable.

Me llegó un correo del ingeniero civil Paul Echániz, nuestro amigo y colaborador de este blog, con la triste noticia de la muerte de Ysrael Seinuk.

Seinuk no se olvidó nunca de sus orígenes y ayudó mucho a los cubanos que llegaban a los EE,UU. y a los estudiantes pobres en Israel.

En su capacidad de ingeniero estructural, él es el hombre que ha hecho que muchos edificios altos se mantengan en pie, gracias a las estructuras de acero y concreto que levantan docenas de pisos sobre la tierra. Con una carrera que se ha extendido por casi cinco décadas, Seinuk, de 73 años, tiene en su haber suficientes rascacielos de renombre, incluido el famoso Lápiz Labial de Philip Johnson; el Trump World Tower, considerado como el edificio de apartamentos más alto del hemisferio y la torre angular Hearst, de Norman Foster, todavía en construcción. Ysrael fue uno de los grandes en su profesion, y no solamente en Nueva York sino en el mundo. Ademas ayudo mucho a los cubanos que venian refugiados y a los estudiantes pobres en Israel.
