El compromiso de la Fundación Educativa Carlos M. Castañeda es promover el periodismo de excelencia, la libertad de prensa y los derechos humanos, principios fundamentales por los que vivió, defendió y ejerció la profesión de periodista Carlos M. Castañeda, fundador, director y consejero de periódicos en América Latina, Miami y el Caribe.

Además de su programa de becas encaminado a apoyar la educación de periodistas hispanohablantes, la FECMC organiza foros, conferencias y talleres sobre temas relacionados con la política, la economía y el periodismo para fortalecer la libertad de expresión y la democracia en nuestra América. Con este fin, la FECMC ofrecerá tres conferencias consecutivas los primeros tres sábados durante el mes de marzo de 2017 a las 3 pm en la librería Books & Books, de Coral Gables.

Los analistas políticos Carlos Alberto Montaner y José Azel disertarán sobre el posible efecto que tendrán en Cuba dos importantes hechos recientes: la muerte de Fidel Castro y la elección de Donald Trump.

Carlos Alberto Montaner – Periodista, ex profesor universitario, comentarista político y escritor de más de 25 libros, entre los más conocidos, Viaje al corazón de Cuba, Cómo y por qué desapareció el comunismo, y Manual del perfecto idiota latinoamericano. También ha escrito varias novelas. Su columna periodística aparece semanalmente en docenas de publicaciones de Europa, América Latina y Estados Unidos.

José Azel – Ex profesor de la Universidad de Miami y Senior Scholar del Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS) de la Universidad de Miami. Actualmente está dedicado al análisis profundo del estado económico, político y social de Cuba con un marcado interés en estrategias para la Cuba post Castro. Es autor de Mañana in Cuba: The Legacy of Castroism and Transitional Challenges for Cuba, y de numerosos artículos sobre el tema cubano.

El pobre montaner, en su odio visceral a trump, por troncharle el futuro a su familia, lo lleva a ser apocalíptico más q Castro I, incluso a decir q mexico puede entrar en conflicto con usa!!!! Jose Azel is a Cuban exile scholar, currently a Senior Scholar at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS)[1] at the University of Miami. He is dedicated to in-depth analyses of Cuba's economic, social, and political state, with a keen interest in post-Castro-Cuba strategies, and has published extensively on Cuba-related topics. Azel is author of Mañana in Cuba: The Legacy of Castroism and Transitional Challenges for Cuba,[2] published in March 2010.[3] Mañana in Cuba has received acclaim from scholars, businessmen, and government officials, including Carlos Alberto Montaner, Carlos Gutierrez, James Cason, and Jaime Suchlicki, among others.

In 2012, Dr. Azel testified before the House of Representative's Committee on Foreign Affairs on the ties between Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela, "Ahmadinejad's Tour of Tyrants and Iran's Agenda in the Western Hemisphere."[4] That same year, Dr. Azel was nominated for the Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award, of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES.)[5]

Azel was one of the founders of Pediatrix Medical Group, the nation's leading provider of pediatric specialty services and served as its first Chief Financial Officer. He co-founded and serves as Board Chairman of Children's Center for Development and Behavior, an organization dedicated to providing therapies for children with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders. Azel was an Adjunct Professor of International Business at the School of Business Administration, Department of Management, University of Miami.

He holds undergraduate and master's degrees in business administration and a Ph.D. in International Affairs from the University of Miami. Dr. Azel has a comprehensive general management background integrating broad functional experience in corporate governance, organizational development and finance.

Azel left Cuba in 1961 as a 13-year-old political exile in what has been dubbed Operation Pedro Pan - the largest unaccompanied child refugee movement in the history of the Western Hemisphere.

On February, 2014 Dr. Azel published a book of poems he wrote as a young exile titled "Pedazos y Vacios"[6] The book is dedicated to the children of the Operation Pedro Pan.

On February 26, 2015 Dr. Azel testified before the United States Western Hemisphere Subcommittee of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on President Obama's new Cuba Policy and U.S. National Security.[7]
